What This Lab Bench Figure Means

This game compares researcher density relative to national R&D spending intensity.

  • The figure divides researchers per million inhabitants by R&D expenditure as a share of GDP.
  • It is not a measure of salaries or productivity. It is a rough sense of how researcher-dense a country looks for each GDP point it devotes to R&D.
  • A high value can reflect lower labor costs, different sector mix, or research systems that employ more people relative to total spend.

Some systems buy expensive science. Some systems buy lots of scientists.
